A distinct lack of knowledge about elephant husbandry is                common among the Phnong owners and users of the                      domestic elephants. Typically there will be 12 mahouts (two            owners and ten users) who share one elephant, through a            time share like arrangement. Quite often the majority of                    mahouts will only use an elephant for a day or two a month            resulting a high rate of abuse and lack of knowledge about              the dietary requirements. This also leads to poor living                      standards as elephants are not given appropriate rest time in          the surrounding forest..
