An Ageing Population

A typical elephant in Mondulkiri will be of similar age to                     their principal owner. An elephant of 50 to 60 years of                     age will have an owner of 50-60 years in age. Coupled                   with strong controls on the remaining wild population                       and a belief system that prevents the breeding of                             domestic elephants, the numbers of domestic elephants                   are declining. It is not E.L.I.E’s purpose to stem this                           decline but to ensure the last few elephants live in good                 conditions treated with dignity and respect. It will take                     time, effort and resources invested in veterinarian care,                 education and development to ensure this is the case.
